|Antique Barrel Stave Trunk
This antique trunk measures a grand 36"L X 29"H X 23"W and comes from
approximately 1872. In perspective, it would be another 9 years before Wyatt
Earp and Doc Holliday would stroll into a gunfight at the OK Corral.
The front/top/back are made of pine and the original maker chose tulip wood
for the sides. The exterior coloring is natural and what happens when wood
ages under leather for 140 years. A nice fiery color on top and a beautiful
brown on the sides. Very nice during the day but the wood tones really come to
life in the evening. On the inside, I added some color to produce a nice variety
of wood tones.
Pictures tell the story pretty well other than the finish. This trunk sparkles like
rock candy at night. On the removable bonnet or hat box there is a piece of the
original exterior leather I attached showing the designs inked into the leather.
Not all was this good and some panels missing entirely or had worn paper thin.
I chose this over the small litho of a very mean looking woman which did not
seem right in this trunk.
