| Antique Flat Top Trunk W/Tray & Working Key Hardwood Construction Wilkins Trunk Mfg - Dallas - Maker "The Sandow" Model Circa 1905 SOLD A super well built antique flat top from Wilkins Trunk Mfg which was founded around 1902. They were located at 271-273 Elm Street in Dallas, Texas. This particular model is what they called the "Sandow" which is something we seldom really know. The trunk measures a large size 36.5"L X 25"H X 22.5"W and is very solidly constructed. Not a big guesser on wood types but the wood here generally reminds me of solid aged birch or maple with a slightly softer tone rather than the more commonly found pine. This is noteworthy I offer. This trunk has a fibre trim which was toned brown. Such fibre became popular in the earlier 1900's as a durable replacement for leather. It is complete and looks nice against the wood. All hardware is original including the heavy cast latches and Yale and Towne lock which comes with a working key. Something extra nice about this trunk is the nail work which is tightly spaced and the nail heads were cleaned up to show clearly against the darker trim. The wood slats appear to be oak. On the very top is a very nice brass makers tag. It is simply a well made, heavy weight trunk. The inside is lightly finished wood similar in appearance to the outside. A very nice tray of the same wood is included. It is divided and quite deeply made with a blanket or two fitting in the larger compartment no problem. Of note - This trunk originally came with leather straps across the top. Some wish to use these as coffee tables so I am offering it without the straps but they can be added. A photo of how the strap keepers on the top would generally appear is included below |
