Large Antique Curved Top Trunk
Original Painted Canvas - New Tray - Working Brass Lock w/Key
From Guthries Trunk Store - Louisville
Circa 1900
SOLD

Measuring an impressive size 38.5"L X 26.5"H X 23.25"W, this antique trunk retains its original
painted canvas which is in top notch shape. It was sold out of the famous Guthrie's Trunk Store
around 1900 and Guthrie's was known for only carrying quality travel accessories.  While it may not
appear in the photo's to be flashy or anything out of the ordinary, it very much looks and feels of
quality in person and is extremely well built. It has the thickest sort of canvas covering, solid metal
hardware, and the nail spacing is extremely tight which is what you want. It is as solid built as they
come and not a lightweight sort of trunk at the least. The latches work great as does the nice swirled
brass lock from Eagle Lock Company dated 1892. New leather handles and straps have been
installed and other that light wear that you would expect to the canvas and oak slats, the exterior is
in remarkable condition and displays with very nice original quality. There are no rips or tears in the
canvas, only slight paint loss in the normal areas of wear such as the bottom front. This trunk is
built to last and extremely smooth to the touch.

The inside was originally a white linen however was stained a bit more that I believed a person
would want so was removed to expose the wood which has been finished. No tray was present
when found so one has been made for it of pine and birch.

On the outside top there is a Guthrie's Trunk Store metal tag and their label is on the inside lid as
well. The initials "K.W." are monogrammed on one side.
The white around the inside lip is
unpainted thick canvas which would
have been hidden by the original
interior. Well constructed, an original
support board is found at the hinge
ares. New birch and pine tray is
below.
