Antique Barrel Stave Trunk
Solid Brass Lock - Original Lithograph - New Tray
Circa 1868
SOLD

Measuring 30"L X 22.5"H X 18.5" W, this antique trunk was quite nice when new being covered in
highly tooled leather and sporting a Leibrich, Hillebrand, and Wolf solid brass lock that is rare to find
(see below).  The leather on this trunk was about 80% gone when found so the remainder was
removed and the wood refinished. There was some metal damage to the bottom and parts of the
edging from rust. I removed the bottom metal and some that went up the side from the bottom (you
will see the color variations) and worked the remainder to be safe, rust free, and freshly painted. The
wood itself is in very good shape and has a wonderful aged color heading towards a natural cherry.
The bottom is a single board, as is the dome, and unaffected by the decayed metal. It has been
finished in the same manner as the rest of the trunk. The trunk as a whole is quite heavy for its size
and there is nothing you can do within reason to hurt it structurally.

The inside is finished wood and one of the original lithographs remain. It is of 4 children hugging
and sitting around a large dog next to his dog house. I had not seen this particular lithograph before
and it was pretty neat to see the 1800's dog house. Under the lithograph on the right side is a small
compartment that is being rebuilt and a new tray of pine and birch will be included.

Note On Lock:  Conrad Leibrich was a fine, long standing lock builder operating under his own
name for many years in Philadelphia. In 1869 it is believe Mr. Leibrich retired and his successors
were Hillebrand and Wolf who marketed locks under their name and eventually Star Lock Works.
This particular lock carries all three mens names which only happened for this issue of locks that I
am aware of. It has patent dates from 1854 to 1867.
