Antique Stallman Theatrical Trunk
Original Canvas - Working Brass Lock w/Key
Circa 1900
SOLD
Being used in a historical program for school children regarding the Oregon Trail and wagon trains from St. Louis, to
Independence, Oregon
Also known as a dresser (as well as pyramidal) trunk, this particular example measures a large 36"L
X 27.5"H X 22"W and retains its outer canvas covering which is completely intact and freshly
refinished. A maker by the last name of Stallman is noted for making this type of trunk.  The original
brass lock is of the nicer sort with a swirled design in the brass. It was made by Excelsior Lock
Works which was in New Jersey. It comes with a working key. While this is classified as a theatrical
or dresser trunk, its unique style allows for opening flush against the wall, the same as a wall trunk.
When opened, its height is 50.5"H. On the corner hardware, a seashell design is present.

The interior is not so original but still pretty nice with a combination of exposed wood for the 3
drawers and the 1 top compartment while the background is a nice material designed by noted
artist P.C. Turczyn and shown pretty well in the photo's. The drawers operate as normal drawers do
and are also removable simply sliding on metal rails. The top compartment has a top that flips up
and secured by leather and snaps when closed. The area behind and to the side of the drawers are
fabric lined as well and everything very clean.

The bottom retains its small wheels and it's in perfect shape. On one side, the original owners
initials (A.H. McD) were worked around with a fine line brush. I can paint over it but thought it added
a nice touch you may wish to retain. Just let me know if you prefer it not be there.
