Antique Flat Top Trunk

Laub Brothers  - Makers - 422 West Jefferson, Louisville
Circa 1905
SOLD
The Laub Brothers were trunk makers you would not hear a lot about but were actually a well
established manufacturer of trunks who's business may have spanned at least 50 years in their
industry, if not more. Some evidence exists that they were in business in the 1860's and I know with
certainty that they were still producing trunks in the 1910's, so a pretty good run probably spanning
2 generations.  A little research would probably produce pictures of a house or two they may have
lived in the later 1800's and things of that nature for those that like to dig around for past history.
Their old location on West Jefferson was in the heart of the city a couple blocks from the Ohio River
and near the old steamboat stop on the Ohio River that is still in use. Just across the way is the
cobblestoned 4th street, the Louisville 4th Street Live....and a newer Hard Rock Cafe.

At  38.5"L X 25.5"H X 22"W, it is substantial. Also nice and slightly unusual to find is the white trim
that is in wonderful shape completely intact. A white leather called "Vellum" was a fad big in the
very late 1800's through about the 1920's and this reflective of that era. The hardware is all original
and works perfectly including the lock which comes with its key. On the lid, there is some damage.
Nothing from decay, but more like very heavy dropped on it.  All the wood was there, just pushed in
a little. The spot has been repaired and is shown below next to a penny. Given the trunk is over 3
feel long, this tiny area really is not distracting and I would be happy to provide additional photos.

The hardware was cleaned up and took on a bronze color that is natural. The wood coloring varies
as two different woods were used in the construction with the sides being different than the front,
top, and back. The photo's below were taken outdoors. Inside the home, the trunk is a bit more
brown toned than shown

Pretty much the same story on the inside as out. Tons of room and it is very suitable for storage. On
one of the side walls, the makers name was found stenciled and that was retained.

A very big old trunk that is clean but left with warm tones for a nice rustic look. Painting of the
hardware black would produce more of a formal look and that option given to the buyer at no
additional cost.
Repaired area. A penny used for scale.
