A large antique trunk from the maker Crouch & Fitzgerald out of New York City. Established in 1839,
they are regarded as one of the premier makers of leather traveling goods.  While there have been
changes in ownership and their business has had to adapt over time, 169 years after first opening
their doors, they are still in business today under the same name. It is a very old American company
and their past customers would include a president, film stars, and an elite group of business
persons as examples.

This is a good size antique trunk at 34.5"L X 23.5"H X 21.5"W. It is well constructed with heavy duty
hardware and solid wood construction of something other than the normal pine. The original leather
covering is intact and aged various colors.

Pretty much everything is original here other than the leather handle holders which were weak and
replaced. Patent dates from the 1890's and various maker marks are stamped into the hardware.
The number #1 is stenciled on one of the sides.
The original interior is intact and includes three trays which are nice. The upper tray has a bi-fold lid
with cloth repairs to where they bend and hinge. The sections were originally held together by
material to allow for the folding and it is typical to see weakness there. Works and looks fine now.
The interior fabric is a waxed linen or coated type material which wipes down great with a moist
towel or even a little furniture polish. My experience with original interiors such as this is that they
take just a bit to develop a comfort level with. Sort of like any second hand item, you have to take it
home and wash it with your detergent and dryer sheet or whatever to give it the smell you are
accustomed to and peace of mind knowing it is clean and suitable. I believe you will be happy that
the original nature was preserved once comfortable with it.
The original makers label is present and of a different type than we normally see. Slight damage to it
but overall not bad.The ribbon work on the lid is original and typical of this maker. The lid prop is
built into the side of the trunk which is seen from the better makers, it is brass lined.

The bottom is leather covered as well and in great shape. It is equipped with its original "4 wheels
drive" which works great when you need to get moving. A picture is included below.
