Circa Mid 1870's
Refinished For Our Friend Donis
started to tease her a bit about the 35 years but have to hand it to her that she held on to a
potentially nice trunk. This was a paper covered trunk from about the mid 1870's. Much of the
original paper is either gone or destroyed, two of the hinges have issues, the rust it quite heavy, and
it apparently had a fight with a paint bucket in the 1970's. Perfect!!! Everything is here for a super
nice trunk.
On the inside, there is a plain white paper that is very soiled but the tray and a couple lithographs
are present.
Both the outside and inside were cleaned of the old paper and sanded. A picture of the natural
coloring was emailed to Donis to ensure that would work for her, and it was agreed upon. With my
direction in hand, I set about working the inside. A repair was made to the tray, and carefully
working around the original lithographs, the inside was smooth sanded and finished. Some cedar
may be in store for under the tray at the owners request. But for now, the inside is completed other
than the cedar which comes in last.
gloss and the hardware painted a professional grade flat black. Using my camera, obtained buy
sending in 165 Cracker Jack UPC labels, I snapped some pictures and other than the cedar, this
one is about done.
It is not bad as shown but is a real looker in person.
