Antique Flat Top Trunk
Circa Early 1900's
Restoration Completed Sept. 2008
A pretty standard design flat top trunk from the early 1900's. The plan is to get some cedar installed
inside and restore the outside back to original. Everything is in mostly good shape although the
canvas is a little thin in spots. We'll see what we can do.
The inside main storage section was stripped and then lined using a fairly thin cedar plank.  Our
plans once the outside is completed would be to build a tray and perhaps cover the inside lid in a
nice material. You get both the original look when it is opened as well as the benefit of the cedar
smell and protection.
The outside was first cleaned up and made ready for restoration. The wood slats were wiped down
with a little pecan stain to add just a touch more color and lightly finished. The canvas was given a
fresh coat of an oil based paint, which is more green in person, and the metal given a fresh coat of
black as was original. The gold coloring on the latches and lock are their original brass and
although not perfect, preferred over paint when possible. New leather handles were then installed
and a key fit to operated the lock.
The inside lid was covered in a patterned material that is in person green and a gold or tan color. It
has some shimmer to it and hard to photograph up close. Looks good in the trunk. A tray was built
using a thin pine that the owner requested be left natural which it is.  Now that everything is
basically done, we'll go back over everything and perform any minor touch up, but otherwise this
restoration is complete.
