Antique Flat Top Trunk
Circa 1900
Restored For Our Friend Sharon
A  canvas covered flat top trunk from the early 1900's that belonged to a member of Sharon's family
in years past. The trunk was structurally in sound shape and retained its thick canvas. Also present
was the original tray inside and the paper covering.

Sharon asked us to save the canvas and add some cedar to the inside. As the tray was present and
the added thickness might present a fit issue, we decided to take the cedar up to the tray line and
then wing it from there.

The outside canvas was cleaned and prepped. Not a lot of rust on this one so the metal was just
given a light go over to get ready to accept new paint and a loose hinge and lid stay repaired. The
oak slats are nicely grained and finished with a moderate gloss. A key was found to fit the lock at
Sharon's request and it works perfectly.

I missed taking any "during" pictures so here is the outside immediately after restoration. Minor
paint touch up remains and another final pass will be given to the bottom once everything else is
completed. The color is a shade of olive green very close to the original we believe.
The inside was well cleaned and sealed. The main storage section was then lined with cedar planks
which is a pretty neat look. As there is a tray with this trunk, the cedar was only taken up to the rails
as to not cause a problem with the tray fitting.  With the tray in place, you cannot see the cedar but
you can smell it.  From the tray rail up,  the interior was covered in a nice patterned upholstery fabric
with brown and tan as the primary colors.  The wood tray was then finished to complete the inside
and pretty much this restoration.
Thank you Sharon and Family for your patience and effort in working with us in getting the colors
nailed down.
