being gray wood that has been cleaned up a bit and will (unless oiled) shortly return to gray which
was actually a nice look contrasting with the darker front. The front bowl area will remain mostly as
shown which was only cleaned and wiped once with a light oil. When found, there were slight
traces of old varnish on the front as in just a few quarter size patches remaining that were flaking.
That typically takes awhile to do on a surface this smooth and most likely done from the previous
owner.
This is a big piece with the largest measurements being 26"L X 17.5"W X 3.75"H and I guess its
weight at around 8lbs give or take. Perhaps it was just a decorative piece but the way in which it
was made leads me to think that it was some sort of serving or cleaning platter such as for small
game or fish. That's just a guess. I asked the person I got if from about its origins and they replied it
can from an old estate sale in St. Louis.
When viewed from the angle of the first and last photo's, its shape and natural wood spits look
exactly like a primitive or tribal face with the splits being in the correct position for eyes and a
mouth. With that, it would make a pretty neat wall hanger if nothing else. The back resting area is flat
and it sits perfectly and would hang fine as well.
This wood has the potential to clean up beautifully if you wanted to but it is old and that is how it is
being offered. At the buyers request I can rub it down with some linseed oil before shipping. It's a
big piece that is not something you see everyday and I will do what I can should you have any
questions.
