During this time period, transportation improved prompting change in design, hardware, and construction methods. The result is what we now commonly call the travel, storage, or steamer trunk. Many of the antique trunks built before the 1880's were made by individual craftsman in small shop environments. These exist in limited numbers while the 1880's brought about a more mass produced era. Although the various designs and characteristics are vast in number, historically speaking, it lasted just a brief instant. Soon, further cultural and manufacturing changes occurred and we adopted other containers such as cardboard boxes, suitcases, and plastic containers that we utilize today for travel and storage. Known by many names, from the Hebrew word aron in Genesis, to arc, coffer, cassone, chest, and trunk, the history is quite storied and their importance to mankind cannot be overstated.
